New bigger fins (right) were part of a coordinated series of changes that came out in 2004 to manage the additional heat that came with higher cylinder pressures introduced that year. All 2004 Sportsters got oil squirters under the pistons to cool the undersides of the domes, MAP based ignition, and these bigger fins on both the heads and cylinders.

Although small fin cylinders can be made to fit on 2004+ bikes by grinding on the lowest fin on the pushrod side, that's a hack! They won't match your heads and you'll go backwards in your cooling capacity. Don't compromise your bike's appearance or cooling capacity with an inferior 1250 kit.
